8. How long have you been playing for?/ How did you get started?

I think I was like 11 or something when I got my first instrument. My Dad plays bass, and he had an extra one kicking around that I found while snooping through his stuff with my sister. In fact, the same time I found the bass, she found an acoustic guitar, which would later turn out to be instrumental in me playing the guitar.

My Dad came home from work, and found us attempting to play the instruments. I thought we were going to be punished, but instead, he gave us those instruments right there. My sister got the guitar, which was fine with me. I remember thinking it didn't look "rock and roll", so I didn't care. That bass though...I just thought it looked like the coolest thing ever made. I remember opening the case for it was like opening a treasure chest; but instead of gold, I found a sweet 70's style, sunburst finished bass-accented with chrome hardware. Whew.

I started playing the bass for real after "jamming" with some local kids. One of the kids played guitar pretty well for his age and he taught me a 12 bar blues scale. After a few months I started taking lessons and learning Green Day songs by ear.
After a couple years of playing bass, my sister eventually upgraded from the crappy acoustic to a red stratocaster knock off. But I didn't care that it was a knock off, that thing was like the sword in the stone to me, and I was King Arthur. Except, it wasn't mine and I couldn't pull it away from my sister, but I wanted to own it. I wanted to be the guitar king.

When I was fourteen I remember playing the bass and I having my little amp turned all the way up, distorted. I was playing some sort of bass solo where I'd eventually start strumming on the two high strings. My Dad walked into the room and told me to stop playing like that. I'm not sure what he said exactly but it was something like this, "If you're gonna play the bass, then play bass. But to me, I think you're a guitarist."

I believed him.

From that point on, I put the bass back in its' treasure chest and picked up the guitar. At night, I'd play my sisters guitar, riffing on Metallica with tablature that I printed off of the internet, until I was able to play those crazy metal songs. Eventually I got as a buss boy and used the money from my earnings to buy a $200.00 Ibanez at a local guitar store. One of the best investments I ever made.

9. Who are/were your influences?
Like I said, Metallica was huge in teaching me how to play guitar, but I was also largely influenced by musically and vocally by Green Day, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Silverchair, 311, Goldfinger, Five Iron Frenzy, Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, The Beatles, The Talking Heads, and Michael Jackson. More recently; Greg Wheaton, Muse, Rodrigo y Gabriella.

But I really think my main influence was my Dad. He was in a band when I was a kid, and I remember thinking that's what guys do, they grow up and play in bands. In fact he taught me how to play be ear, and how to play at all.

Conan O'brian.

11. What deceased person would you like to meet?
My Grandpa on my Dads side. I'd like to meet him as an adult, since I was really young when he died. I think it'd be cool to go back in time and talk to him when he was in his 20's. It's just crazy to think that at one time, that old guy with gray hair was my age, and was in the same place in life.

Wait, a table isn't a drum? Actually, true story here, Jon, Nick and I were drumming so loud on my kitchen table, we had the cops called on us for disturbing the peace. -Dwight Schrute

49. Are you a morning or a night person?
Night.

50. Meanest thing you've ever done to a sibling?
Aside from stealing guitars, and money, I think the meanest thing I did was nothing. We had a neighbor kid who was a few years older than me. He was huge, and he was a bully. One day he shot a bb gun or a rock from a slingshot at my sister while she was riding her bike, and (thankfully) it hit the bike frame and not her. When she told me about it I did nothing, I was too afraid. What I should have done, was attacked that guy. Even though I would have most likely gotten the crap beat out of me, I would have at the very least been a good brother.
